Abell 21
Abell 21 is a planetary nebula because the first of the types observed looked like a planet. Although the observer knew full well that they were not planets because they did not move against the background stars.
A planetary nebula is what happens to a star similar to one the size of the Sun or smaller at the end of it's life when it puffs out its outer atmosphere.
