OAS Mission to the National Space Centre
Following a ‘Code Cracking Time’ at Bletchley Park in January we held our second OAS visit of the year on Saturday 25th March 2023 when 14 members and one guest left St Francis Church Hall just after 08.00 to travel by minibus to the National Space Centre in Leicester.
We were able to spend over four hours exploring the various interactive galleries, take in a 30 minute show at the Sir Patrick Moore planetarium and travel back in time to view all the exhibits in the impressive multi-level Rocket Tower.
The planetarium show, called ‘CAPCOM GO!’ featured the remarkable story behind the Apollo missions of over 50 years ago and highlighted the historic moment Neil Armstrong became the first man to set foot on the Moon. The clever combination of archive footage and modern digital reconstruction, plus the use of surround sound allowed the events to be dramatically brought to life on the large domed screen making this a truly memorable experience.
After a long day we arrived back at Petts Wood at around 19.30 feeling perhaps a little tired, but happy to have had an interesting and enjoyable day out.
